WEEK STARTING MONDAY 3RD APRIL:

Monday 3rd April:

It’s a big day today. It’s my birthday, I’m 66 years of age and I now get the pension. I definitely won’t be retiring as I still enjoy the dogs as much as the day I started. My health is good and if I could lose a bit of weight, I would be perfect. Its 29 years today since I moved into Lughill Kennels to start the dream of breeding, rearing and schooling greyhounds. In the last 29 years the industry has changed dramatically. It’s definitely not going to finish and there’s a list of very positive things for the future. In Ireland we are now fully regulated, and we nearly have one full day per week for one person to do paperwork. We’re all inspected on a regular basis and every hound is now fully traceable. All hounds that don’t start a racing career can be retired and all broods at the end of their breeding career can also be retired. Both are massive positives for the industry as from the day I started we have never put a healthy greyhound to sleep. The plan on Monday is to go to Shelbourne Park for trials. We need meat and there’s also passport work to be done to get hounds that are sold over to the UK. There won’t be much of a rest even though it’s my birthday.
